User benefits
Being a registered user lets you carry your catalogues accross sessions (ie catalogues that are uploaded by you in one session do not get removed at the end of a session). It also lets you run jobs that would time out in batch form, getting notified when the job is ready to be retrieved. Checking of guide stars can only be done by registered users since it always goes into batch mode, and it is likely that future new services that take a long time will be forcibly batched as well.
